A twisted matrix of colourful pipes and a family of insect-inspired furniture elements are not the things you typically pass by on your daily commute. Our five outdoor “Micro Rooms” across the Canterbury-Bankstown LGA in Sydney reintroduce whimsy, colour and joy back into a series of public places that have been stripped of these qualities by the pandemic.
Occupying small alleys and reclaimed carparks, the Micro Rooms are a pilot new and innovative ideas for the transformation of streets into safe public spaces. At the same time, they test community acceptance for the removal of on-street parking.
We hope that these projects, which are humble in scope, shout the value of tactical urbanism, temporary installation and placemaking as grassroot approaches in giving the community a hand in testing new ideas about how their streets work.
