Cemeteries have long been important symbolic spaces, but with the increasing scarcity of urban land, there is a growing need for them to embrace impermanence, multiplicity, and change. In Australia, contemporary cemetery designs are evolving to include passive recreation, social opportunities, and environmental rehabilitation, reimagining the role these places play in local communities.
Bunurong Memorial Park in Melbourne’s Southeast celebrates the Australian landscape while offering a variety of community uses—from play spaces and native gardens to a café and diverse memorialisation options. As noted by Global Design Director Kirsten Bauer in a recent article by Emma Sheppard-Simms, the design aims to be "civic and reflective, rather than religious and too culturally specific."
By integrating community amenities into cemetery landscapes, we can create multifunctional spaces that foster social connection and environmental resilience while honouring their unique role and purpose.
