As construction begins on the new Sydney Harbour Bridge Cycleway, The Hon. Jo Haylen visited the Sydney Studio to explore the project's key design elements and learn more about this transformative, city-shaping project.
From a new landing plaza in Bradfield Park, cyclists wil lsoon be able to join the 200 metre-long and 3.1 metre-wide two-way dedicated cycle ramp across the bridge, enabling riders of all ages and abilities to safely link up with shared paths and cycleways on either side of the harbour.
Materials have been thoughtfully selected to honour the historical significance of the site and the heritage of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Granite for sections of the paving is sourced from Moruya on the NSW South Coast—the same granite used for the original Harbour Bridge pylons—seamlessly connecting the past with the present
The cycleway ramp is more than just infrastructure; it symbolises Sydney’s evolving approach to transport and its commitment to a sustainable future on a global scale. Just as the approaches to the Sydney Harbour Bridge have adapted over time—from the arrival and departure of trams to the construction of motorway on-ramps—this cycleway reflects where our city is heading: embracing active, sustainable travel and aligning with other global capitals placing cycling at the heart of urban mobility.
Congratulations to all our collaborators on this project milestone: Collins and Turner (architects), Eckersley O'Callaghan (engineers), Design 5 (heritage), Arenco NSW Pty Ltd (builder) and Transport for NSW.
