The festive atmosphere at a recent open street day on Crown Street, in Sydney’s Surry Hills, made a powerful argument for making streets more focused on people.
ASPECT Studios was involved in the transformation of a one-kilometre stretch of Crown Street between Oxford and Devonshire Streets, which involved widening footpaths and introducing more space for planting, trees and shade.
Sacha Coles, ASPECT Studios Global Design Director, grew up on Crown Street and remembers it as an arterial road full of trucks and cars. “Now it’s one of Sydney‘s great high streets, and I’m proud that ASPECT was able to assist the City of Sydney in making it a warmer, more civic place.”
Hats off to the City of Syndey for this demonstration of their commitment to tweaking car-dominated streets into meaningful public spaces. Read more about the project here.
