The project aims to breathe new life into Dixon Street and re-establish it as the vibrant heart of Chinatown.
The proposal respects and celebrates both the heritage Chinatown Gates and its mature fig trees, whilst also improving access to light. New public seating and paving inserts will interpret culture, provide new amenity and guide visitors along the street.
Lighting plays a significant role in the design, with an installation of coloured ribbons weaving through the street, inspired by the traditional Chinese concept of ‘auspicious clouds illuminated by the moon.’
The project now enters a two-week community engagement period and can be viewed on the City of Sydney ‘Have your Say’ website.
The ASPECT Studios led design team also includes Sibling Architecture, Electrolight, and Studio Yu&Mei.
