Kensington Gardens Reserve

This project has delivered significant recreational and environmental benefits to a crucially important natural reserve.

The upgrade and expansion of the Stonyfell Creek wetland and the consequential relocation of existing tennis courts offered an opportunity to create a landscape design to provide a range of new recreational experiences, amenities and linkages.

ASPECT Studios, working with the City of Burnside and Southfront, identified opportunities beyond the initial scope of the project, and developed a master plan that provides a strong interface to the upgraded wetland while also developing a greatly expanded space for gathering, rest, recreation, nature play and fitness.

Key features of the upgrade include a new nature play space, multiple viewing decks and boardwalk across the wetland, upgraded tennis courts, and significant areas of new indigenous planting. Pedestrian and cyclist linkages are enhanced with a new trail, and active lifestyles are further encouraged with new fitness stations.

The site is significant to the Kaurna people, representatives of whom have collaborated with the design team to develop cultural interpretation and narrative themes across the site. Aboriginal Contemporary Arts supplied cultural artwork that enriches the nature play experience and further embeds cultural meaning into the project.
