Pirrama Park
Pirrama Park is a transformative urban parkland project born from community action. ASPECT Studios has overseen its redevelopment from a fenced-off, post-industrial concrete slab into a rich and textured urban waterfront parkland.
The park restores a relationship between the city and the waterfront, while delivering unique waterside community facilities and innovative sustainable components including solar energy generation and far-reaching storm water initiatives. ASPECT Studios undertook the master planning and detailed design stages of the project with Hill Thalis Architecture + Urban Projects and CAB Consulting.

At the project’s outset, ASPECT was presented flat and featureless base – a legacy of the site’s industrial past. The design response was to give flavour and structure to this blank slate by staging the park as a series of outdoor “rooms” connected by a complex web of paths. A waterfront promenade around the foreshore provides a water-oriented backbone to the park and, significant marine engineering at the harbour edge created a sheltered bay which reveals the former shoreline of the site.
Key to the park’s success was the creation of multiple recreation opportunities along the waterfront, offering an opportunity to step down and engage with the water. A new public square on the lip of the water, defined by the sandstone cliff on the curve of Pirrama Road, can accommodate a range of public uses including cultural events and performances, meetings, markets, and festivals.
The integrated site-specific play space has quickly become an attraction for both locals and district visitors alike. The water play elements, reclaimed sandstone, a breathtaking natural setting and the unifying qualities of ASPECT’s design have created a unique public asset for a growing inner city population.
