Windsor Plaza
Windsor Plaza is a new public space in a highly contested urban realm of inner Melbourne. The surrounding area has very little open space and the council sought to create more public space on the streetscape, instead of acquiring additional land at great public expense. Two key public spaces were created around Windsor Railway Station. To the south, a new village square was reclaimed through the realignment of roads. To the north, the existing roadway was narrowed and converted to a shared street and urban plaza.
The design thinking came from a contemporary approach to the site’s historic context, its brick and bluestone materiality and the needs of the community.

To successfully compete with Chapel Street and the railway advertising signs required something bold and challenging - but grounded in history and detail.
