John Paul College Kindergarten
The brief from John Paul College was to provide a stimulating outdoor kindergarten experience. In response, ASPECT Studios created an adventurous play space packed with opportunities to learn through the senses, using nature-rich materials to challenge and test children through purposeful play.
Research has found that in these times of restricted independent mobility for children and limited interaction with their neighbourhood environments, schools play a major part in providing children the opportunity to get outside, exercise, and engage with the senses.

The benefits of nature play as an unstructured opportunity are many, including the opportunity to develop gross motor skills, improving cognitive function, increasing creativity, socialisation and building immunity through interaction with natural materials such as mud, sand and leaves.
This playground offers a range of nature-rich opportunities, from a pump that children can operate to let water into a stream, to balance logs, climbing ropes, hopping stumps and a large grassy open circle to run around and engage in ever-changing obstacle courses.
There are also quiet offerings, such as the gunyah, a structure designed to encourage imaginative play with an adaptable frame, as well as a garden with edible and sensory planting.
